Welcome to St. Aidan’s National School, Bawnboy, Co. Cavan
As we begin the 2025/26 school year, we are delighted to welcome Ms. Quirke to our staff. We are also thrilled to have ten wonderful Junior Infants starting their journey with us, bringing our enrolment to 78 pupils.

A big thank you to our pupils for donating 49 boxes full to the brim of gifts for the ‘Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal.’
Well done all!

Check out the photos below of the pupils in 6th Class who attended a Science Workshop in St. Mogue’s College on Tuesday 13th November.
Once again we took part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. A big thank you to all the children who filled over 50 boxes for children less fortunate than themselves. Well done!
Diocesan Religious Advisor Sr. Anna visited our school recently. We held a whole-school assembly and the theme was ‘In November, We Remember’. See photos below taken at the assembly during which we remembered in a special way those who have died.
To mark National Science Week the pupils in 5th and 6th Classes attended a workshop in St. Mogue’s College where they got a chance to engage in Science activities and experiments. Everyone really enjoyed the day.
Well done to all who entered the art competition organised by the Credit Union. This year’s theme was ‘Set Your Imagination Free’. Congratulations to the following winners: Tom McNulty, Danika Donohoe, Jamie Langan, Ella Donohoe and Shanna Langan.
Our pupils, along with pupils from other local schools, attended a Ceremony of Commemoration of the Leaders of 1916 at Bawnboy Workhouse on Friday 12th May. We sang ‘The Ballad of James Connolly’ and ‘Ireland’s Call’. With the help of Cavan County Council a garden of remembrance was officially opened. Seven trees, one for each of the signatories, have been planted and the enclosed garden has a seating area where people can come and remember the events of 1916.
Our boys’ football team have been playing in the Cumann na mBunscol competition over the past few weeks. In the group stages, we had a great victory over Corlurgan on our new pitch at the school. In our next match, we lost out to Tunnyduff on the 3G at Breffni Park. This meant that we qualified for the Semi-Finals. We played Lacken on Tuesday evening in Crosskeys. The match was extremely competitive and there were only two points between the teams with 5 minutes to go. Unfortunately, we lost out 12:0 – 6:12, although our players battled right until the final whistle. There were excellent skills on show and a fine display of point kicking from long range! A special thanks to Chris McCaffrey, who trained the team over the past few weeks, in preparation for the competition.
Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Classes competed in the Cumann na mBunscol Hurling Blitz on Thursday 25th May in Lacken. They had been busy practising every Tuesday after school.
Pupils took part in An Taisce National Spring Clean Day. Photos below show them hard at work.
