Active Dance Launch

To launch our committee, we had a Hallowe’en dress-up day with wiggling witches, flossing skeletons, racing vampires, dancing jokers, etc. Have a look at our active Hallowe’en and our launch song “Baby witch….doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo!”

Active Advent

The Committee decided as a follow-up to our active weeks in November that we would do an Active Advent to make sure we are super fit for Santa. Some committee members decided to make an active advent countdown. Each day they went into each classroom to help the pupils with their fitness. It was a huge success.

Santa Dash

Well done to everyone who went dashing around the school on our first Santa Dash.

The Christmas music kept up our spirits as we dashed around the school looking for Santa’s treats.

Keep On Dancing!

Pupils enjoy learning the ‘Cha Cha Slide’.

Jump Into January

Our main focus for January was the Fundamental Movement Skills of Jumping. the FMS are the basic building blocks of movement and are an essential part of everyday life and recreational activity. It is only when these skills are mastered that a child can go on to develop specialised movement skills, which will allow them to reach their potential in sports. We focused on the technique of Jumping- Jumping for height and jumping for distance.

February Fitness Fanatics

The Active School committee set up playground games to improve fitness and agility.

Our Active School Walkway

Caolán and Finn from The Active School Committee along with Colm from 5th class used the trundle wheel to measure the distance of our new ‘Walkway’ in metres. They measured out a 500m route and then extended it to 1km for the senior classes. Thanks to Siobhán’s dad, Richard who put up the new plaques which highlight route and distance. The Committee decided that we should begin our Walk on Wednesdays first thing in the morning doing “our talking as we are walking”. The Senior classes designed incentive posters to display on the windows to motivate us to keep on walking on our route.

Playground Leaders

Our playground leaders are up and running every Tuesday. They have been busy all year teaching new games and setting up little obstacle races for the younger boys and girls.

Active Breaks Initiative

It has been proven that short physical activity breaks throughout the day can help students attention, memory and understanding With that in mind the Active School Committee provided each class teacher with Active Break posters and set them the challenge of providing their children with a variety of active breaks to energise the school day. The pupils loved the idea of getting up and getting moving, getting dancing, getting walking, getting active and they reported that they felt a new lease of energy to complete their work

Hurling Training With Mr Quinn

10 @ 10

Sometimes our 10 @ 10 takes place in our classrooms but other times the Active School Committee try to set up little stations to give the pupils variety in their activity. Well done to the Committee!!

Drop Everything And Run

We have a wonderful football pitch with a track right around it. Thank you to Finn’s daddy Bryan who helped make distance markers and the Active School Committee in early November marked out the track in 100m, 200m and 500m. The pupils take every opportunity to drop everything and RUN!

Running Initiative – Run Around Ireland

We planned to complete our daily running initiative from Tuesday, 19th March until Tuesday, 16th April but because of its huge success and the children’s enthusiasm to keep on running we extended our running until the Easter holidays. All classes from Junior Infants to 6th class completed the ‘Run Around Ireland’ challenge. We used Google Maps to calculate the distances from Bawnboy to a place of their choice. Each class teacher tracked their own class achievements. Well done to everyone involved!
5 laps of our school football pitch equalled 1km so it was easy to track progress
Mrs Doherty’s Class chose to run to Tayto Park
Mrs Boyle’s Class to The Spire
Mrs Maguire’s Class to the Cliffs of Moher
But they didn’t stop there and continued to track their journey.
