Active School Committee

The Active School Committee have many responsible roles, such as organising playground leaders, preparing and demonstrating active homework, setting up activities for 10 @10, checking equipment, organising fundraisers for extra resources and organising Active School Week. They meet at the start of the month and plan the activities they would like to see happening in the month ahead. They came up with ideas such as Jump into January, February Fitness and really stepped up active homework as the year progressed.

Active Logo

All pupils and parents were invited to submit a poster displaying their active school logo.

It was a tough decision for the ASF committee and the winner was Colm.

Great caption and poster.

Well done Colm!

Parental Support

Many parents are actively involved in the local GAA club and from time to time notes are sent home via the school.

  • Parental involvement
  • Parents support the delivery of the Physical Education curriculum.
  • They ensure that active homework is done.
  • They promote the importance of physical fitness and healthy living at home.
  • They attend school football/hurling/camogie matches.
  • They have donated gym mats and javelins to school to be used in the delivery of the PE curriculum.
  • Sliotars, helmets and football have been acquired through outside funding.
  • Parents have given of their time, expertise and money to develop a wonderful football pitch on school grounds, together with new goal posts, nets and walking /running track which has been an invaluable resource in our pursuit of the Active School Flag.

Promoting Healthy Eating – Partnership With Past Pupils

As part of our Active School Project we invited past pupil Siobhán McCaffrey (née Murphy) to our school to talk to the pupils about healthy eating, a balanced diet and being active.

Siobhán is a dietician for children and is based in the South West Acute Hospital.

Her key messages were that the most important drink is water; we should eat a variety of fruit and vegetables; a healthy breakfast will set us up for the day and children should be active for one hour daily.

Ben was delighted when she agreed that farming was indeed a great form of exercise!

Gaelic Games – Cumann Na MBunscoil

We participated in the Cumann na mBunscol boys’ football league.

We played matches against Corlurgan and Tunnyduff.

Have a look below to see some photos from our match vs. Corlurgan.

We didn’t let the rain dampen our spirits!

We qualified for the Semi-Finals, but unfortunately we lost out to Lacken.

Thanks to Chris McCaffrey for training the team.

Thank you Cian!

HSE Health Promotion Partnership
Thanks to the HSE Health promotion officer, Monica McCrory who gave us lots of advice on what we can do to promote health in our school. She also helped us source stencils for our playground markings and the Active School Committee just got to work.
