History

St. Aidan’s N.S. is situated in Bawnboy, a small village in a valley at the foot of Slieve Rushen, between Ballyconnell and Swanlinbar, in Co. Cavan. The school stands on a site of one and a half acres. This includes a tarmac playground, a playing field, a ball alley, a front lawn and school garden.
The school bears the name of St. Mogue (Aidan) who was born on the island of Port in the parish of Templeport.
There has been a school in Bawnboy since 1826 and indeed prior to that there was a hedge school on the site where Sean O’Reilly’s house now stands. The first proper school was built in 1841 where Patrick McGovern’s house is situated.
The next school was built in 1878 on the site of what is now the home of the McCann Family. Unusually, this was a two-storey building with girls being taught on the first floor (St. Mogue’s Girls) while the boys occupied the ground floor (St. Mogue’s Boys). In 1943 the name was changed to St. Aidan’s N.S. with the junior children upstairs and the senior classes downstairs. Electricity was connected in the 1950’s but the school did not have piped water until much later.
The present school was opened on 31st August 1971 as a two-teacher school and an extension of a third classroom and a general purpose room was added in 1979 when Munlough School was amalgamated with us.
Presently St. Aidan’s N.S. has three mainstream teachers, one shared learning support teacher and 57 pupils on roll.

our school crest

The symbol of the book represents learning, while the flowering branch represents the distaff, which bloomed in the hand of Eithne when her son Mogue was born.
The combination of the two reflects the aspiration of our school; ‘Growing through learning’ while the continuous celtic twist reminds us of our links with the past and our hopes for the future.
