Our school actively promotes good school attendance.  Well done to Niamh Fitzpatrick and Megan Leonard who received Gold Certificates for full attendance this school year.

Well done also to Orlagh Leech, Catriona Griffin, Dara McManus and Cormac Cassidy who received Silver Certificates for only missing one day.

What an achievement!

Connecting People, places and Heritage Project, 20 June 2012

Picture
The pupils in 5th and 6th Class have been taking part in the ‘Connecting People, Places and Heritage’ Project in conjunction with the County Museum in Ballyjamesduff.  We were partnered with Darley N.S. Cootehill and over the year both schools have met together several times, working on a wide variety of projects.  At their first meeting the children took part in a cultural diversity workshop and further meetings explored local heritage issues with an emphasis on themes relevant to peace issues.  Today both schools met for the last time.  Look at the photo of the wonderful artwork created by our pupils today!

Olympic Torch Visit 2012, June 2012

Picture
We had a wonderful surprise this morning when Ann Costello, aunt of Liam Bannon(Fifth Class) contacted the school to say she would be able to bring the Olympic Torch to visit us!  Ann taught us a little about the history of the torch.  We found out that the torch we saw today has 3 sides because the Olympics has been held in London 3 times and that it has 8000 holes in it corresponding to the 8000 torch-bearers used in this year’s games.  Thanks to Liam and his Aunt for this very special treat!

Girls Football

Well done to St. Aidans N.S. Cumann na mBunscoil Girls Football Team who won the Division 6 Final. Congratulations to Katie Mc Nulty for winning Player of the Match.

Junior Trip, June 2012

Picture
The children in Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class enjoyed their end of year trip to Enniskillen College of Agriculture.  We learned all about animals and minibeasts and went on a minibeast trail.  We had a picnic outside.  On our way home we stopped off at the playground in Bawnboy.

A fun day was had by all!

Paddy Madden Environmental Show, 25 May 2012

Picture
Today we were very lucky to have Paddy Madden, Environmental Expert visit our school.  Paddy provided a wonderful display of resources for us to explore.  We learned all about fossils, life in the hedge row, birds, trees, animal habitats, biodiversity and lots more!  We were very impressed.  Thank you Paddy for coming to visit us.  We really did enjoy the day.

Yoga fun, May 2012

Picture
Pupils in Junior Infants, Senior Infants, First and Second Classes have been taking part in yoga classes with yoga teacher Geraldine Tierney-Smith every Tuesday for the past 6 weeks. During each yoga session Geraldine integrates yoga postures into adventures and creative stories that the children love.  It is amazing to see how the children have improved both physically by strengthening their natural flexibility and also mentally by building confidence in themselves and improving their concentration.

Skipping Spectacular, 30 April 2012

Picture
Skipping is taking St. Aidan’s N.S. by storm!

For the whole month of April pupils (and teachers!) have been taking part in developing their skipping skills.  The children in the older classes have been teaching the younger children during break time.  Some children have made up their own skipping rhymes and routines.

On Monday 30th April we have a whole school skipathon in our school playground.  There was forward/backward skipping, hula hoop skipping, long rope skipping, paired skipping and skipping races.  We also had a competition to see who could skip for the longest time without stopping.  It was a successful and fun event.  Well done everyone!

Look at the photos on the left to see what we got up to at our skipathon!

Seachtain na Gaeilge 2012, 16 march 2012

Picture
We celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge in our school this week.  We made an extra effort to speak more Irish during the day.  On Friday the children took part in a Tráth na gCeist.  Then we had a Céilí Mór.  All the children dressed in green.  Each class performed poems and songs.  We danced the Walls of Limerick, the Siege of Ennis and Shoe the Donkey.

Everyone had a great time!

Check out our photos from the day.

Something fishy, 12 March 2012

Picture
Today all pupils enthusiastically took part in the Something Fishy programme run by the Irish Inland Fisheries Board in collaboration with Monaghan Education Centre.

We had a great day looking at and holding different types of fish.  We learned about the Life Cycle of the Salmon and things which affect the quality of the water in our rivers and lakes.  We also enjoyed using the microscope to investigate which creatures could be found in the water samples.  The Senior Classes were shown a PowerPoint presentation about conservation and environmental protection.
